Replace the Arm, the Bushing, or the Ball Joint?

Replacing the complete control arm is often the practical choice because it may include fresh bushings and, on certain designs, a preinstalled ball joint. It saves labor compared with pressing bushings in and out, and it helps ensure all wear points are addressed at once.

Replacing only bushings can make sense when the arm is structurally sound and quality replacement bushings are available. Performance arms can be a smart upgrade for cars with lowering springs, coilovers, wider wheels, drag-oriented setups, or more aggressive street use. Some offer firmer bushings, stronger materials, adjustable geometry, or added camber and caster range. Those features can help dial in alignment after a suspension change and improve response under load.

There is a trade-off. Firmer polyurethane-style bushings and spherical bearings can transmit more vibration, noise, and road texture into the cabin. Adjustable arms also need correct setup and periodic inspection. They are not automatically better for every Charger or Challenger. If your priority is quiet commuting and factory-like behavior, a high-quality stock-style arm may be the better upgrade.

Fitment Comes Before Price

Control arms are often side-specific, position-specific, and platform-specific. A control-arm job is not complete when the bolts are tight. Many rubber-bushed arms must be final-torqued at normal ride height, not with the suspension hanging at full droop. Tightening them in the air can preload the bushing and shorten its service life once the car sits on the ground.

Use the manufacturer torque specifications for every fastener, and replace one-time-use hardware where required. If a ball-joint fastener, pinch bolt, or locking nut is specified for replacement, treat that requirement seriously. Suspension hardware carries braking and cornering loads. This is not the place for guesswork.

Get a professional alignment after replacing any arm that affects wheel position. Even if alignment settings appear close, new bushings can change where the suspension settles. An alignment protects your tires and confirms that camber, caster, and toe are where they need to be.
