DIY Installation Guide: Fuel Pump Module for Dodge Ram 2500 & 3500

Important note: The fuel pump, fuel level sending unit, fuel pressure regulator, and inlet filter are built into a single sealed module. If one component fails, you must replace the entire assembly. Individual parts are not sold separately.

This guide applies to both the Dodge Ram 2500 and Ram 3500 models (including 2010 variants).

 Step-by-Step Removal Instructions

Follow these steps carefully to avoid damaging the fuel tank or the new module:

  1. Relieve system pressure & disconnect power – Relieve the fuel system pressure, then disconnect the negative cable from your battery.

  2. Raise the vehicle – Safely lift the truck and secure it on jack stands. Lower the fuel tank to access the module.

  3. Prevent contamination – Thoroughly clean the area around the fuel pump module before opening it. This keeps dirt and debris out of your fuel tank.

  4. Mark alignment – Use a marker to note the position of the arrow on the top of the fuel pump module. This ensures proper orientation during reinstallation.

  5. Remove the lock-ring – Using pliers, or a hammer and brass drift (to prevent sparks), carefully loosen and unscrew the retaining lock-ring.

  6. Lift out the module – Gently remove the old fuel pump/sending unit module from the tank.

  7. Inspect the gasket – Check the large rubber O-ring that seals the mounting hole. Always replace it if you see any cracks, warping, or wear.

 Reinstallation Steps

Installation is the reverse of removal. Crucial step: When placing the new module into the tank, align the embossed arrow exactly with the mark you made in Step 4. Twist the lock-ring back into place securely, but do not overtighten.

Troubleshooting: Why isn’t my fuel pump turning on?

If your fuel pump does not prime (you don’t hear a brief “whirring” sound when turning the key to the “ON” position), follow this diagnostic checklist:

  1. Check the fuses – Inspect the fuel pump fuse and relay located in the underhood fuse/relay box.

  2. Inspect the wiring – Examine the wiring harness leading to the fuel pump for cuts, corrosion, or loose connections.

  3. Listen for the prime – Turn the ignition key to “ON” and listen closely near the fuel tank. If you hear nothing, and the fuses/wiring are intact, the fuel pump module is likely defective and needs replacement.
